Static Shock Gig Vol #77: IMPALERS (USA), AJAX (USA), NO & CULT SYNDROME

Static Shock Gig Vol #77

IMPALERS
There are a few phrases you will always see in reviews for hardcore bands; "this rips!" or "totally insane!!" or even the occasional "fucking brutal!" But there here is something you don't hear every day: FINESSE. And I can think of no better word to describe Austin's Impalers. I could talk about the perfect drumming, the wailing solos, the expert riffs, or I could just call like I see it: this band is flawless, never boring, and a total banger on top of that. These boys have cut their teeth touring in various bands like Vaaska, Insect Warfare, Glue, Mammoth Grinder, Power Trip and countless others and playing on countless releases for more than a few years now and it shows. They almost has a later Cimex vibe without all the cheesy shit that made you afraid to admit that you liked those records. Like I said before, FINESSE. These guys know what the are doing and are here to make that very clear to you. Releases on 540, Beach Impediment, Trabuc, Todo Destructo and Static Shock Records.

AJAX
Taking the blueprint of blistering USHC with riffs reminiscent of Swedish classics like Totalitär and one of the most powerful vocalists going today, Ajax have quickly become one of the most interesting contemporary hardcore bands. Featuring members of Warthog, Creem and Nuclear Spring and with releases on Katorga Works, Static Shock and Even Worse Records.

NO
Ferocious dissonant hardcore focused in intensity and all-out rage. References to Midwest USA hardcore are often used to describe NO but while not completely off the mark they are just one of the many points of reference for this rather complicated band. NO are another living proof of how great the current UK hardcore crop is. Releases on Static Shock and La Vida Es Un Mus.

Upcoming shows...

I feel like I can occassionly neglect spreading the word about gigs that I'm putting on in London outside of using the traditional methods of flyers / posters and the not so traditional method of using Facebook. To help combat this, I'm going to start announcing shows on here too. Here's what's coming up over the next week:

Static Shock Gig Vol #74

BAD NOIDS (USA)

From the town that brought you 9 Shocks Terror, H100s and Inmates, the new school of Cleveland Ohio hardcore punk is here with Bad Noids. Simple, anthemic, catchy punk rock for simple, anthemic, catchy people. Did I mention that their singer Oddjob lights his hair on fire while playing? Did I also mention that they have a harmonica solo that might be even better than Gorilla Biscuits? A lot of bands wish they were from Cleveland, others actually are. Up the gamma toaster punks. LP on Katorga Works.

SSR031 Coming Soon: SHEER MAG - II 7"

The sophomore EP from Sheer Mag should be out by late May / early June, pressing plant shenanigans aside...

SHEER MAG - II
In 2014, Sheer Mag seemingly came out of nowhere with what was probably our favorite release of the year, debuting, straight to vinyl, their brand of hard rock-inspired power pop perfection. This time around, expectations are unreasonably high, but guess what? Sheer Mag don't care!

Out from under this table, these Philly miscreants return stronger than ever, this time toning down (ever so slightly) the power pop undertones that got them comparisons to the Shivvers (female vocals?) and putting the rock in the forefront. Still, the band could pass as the Jackson 5 re-imagined as a punk trash compactor and this record stands tall as what will definitely be the hard rock record of the year.

If you're in America, you should pick up the record directly from Katorga Works / Wilsuns RC. It'll work out way cheaper for you!

PERSPEX FLESH - 'Ordered Image' 12"EP + SHEER MAG - S/T 7" OUT NOW!

Hi all,

So, three weeks after our first two releases of the year, we're back with another two!

------------------------------------------------------------------------

SSR028: PERSPEX FLESH - Ordered Image 12"EP

Just under a year from the release of their debut LP, Leeds, Yorkshire's PERSPEX FLESH return with a brand new 6 track 12" EP. Undoubtedly their strongest work yet, this takes all of the influences of the previous records, the feeling of claustrophobia, the tasteful nods to bands such as RUDIMENTARY PENI, SPIKE IN VAIN and COLD SWEAT, as well as an occasional post punk feel, and merges it into something ugly and unique. UK Hardcore has been possibly in it's best state for the best part of two decades in recent memory, and this is another record to help enforce that claim. Featuring members of THE FLEX, DiE and BROKEN ARM.

There's also a special mailorder pressing on clear vinyl too. This is limited to 150 copies and will most likely not stick around for too long...

PERSPEX FLESH are also touring the East Coast of America with RAZORHEADS starting this Thursday. Dates are below, don't miss them if they're playing near you!

SSR029: SHEER MAG - S/T 7"

The debut 7" from Philadelphia's SHEER MAG finally gets a wider UK and European release! Sheer Mag seemingly came out of nowhere last Autumn with this killer four track EP. It is the only record of recent times that manages to sound like a mix of a classic Seventies rock record, power pop and an obscure English DIY 7" from the late 70's. Everything sounds scrappy, fuzzy and scuzzy and it's all the better for it. The riff packed guitar work and fuzzed female vocals sit perfectly together whilst the crude rhythms just adds bounce and basic beats. Think a mix of the power pop delight of Protex, the lo-fi nature of The Seize, the riffs of Thin Lizzy and the powerful female vocal of Suzi Quatro. It shouldn't work but it does. It really does!

SHEER MAG are currently halfway through a full-US tour, and the remaining dates are below.

The IMPALERS and ULTRA VIOLENT releases from earlier this month are still available too! The Ultra Violent 7" is running very low right now, but a repress is due in the next couple of weeks. For those who have asked, it's 100% identical to the current one.

Following these new releases, we have a few more up our sleeves. The first of which will be a MLP from Dublin's DISGIUSE called 'Signs Of The Future'. The record is being mastered as you read this, and there will be a preview track online soon enough. In the meantime, check out the artwork below, and feel free to use it as a new band name generator:

We'll also have a new record from New York's AJAX out to co-incide with their UK / European tour with IMPALERS. Dates for that are below too! There's a couple of other things in the works as well, which will be mentioned in good time.

I think that's all for now, thanks for the support as always, and I hope you like the new records as much as I do.

Tom / Static Shock

ULTRA VIOLENT - Crime For Revenge 7" reissue + IMPALERS - Psychedelic Snutskallar 12"EP out now!

Hi there! Things have been a little quiet from us so far this year, but we've been working on a bunch of projects and will be releasing four records over the next few weeks. Apart from having the occasional sleepless night wondering how I'm going to pay for all of these I'm really excited about every one of them and I hope you will be too.

The first two are now available to order!

SSR025: ULTRA VIOLENT - Crime For Revenge 7" Reissue

Originally released on Riot City Records in 1983 and quickly becoming one of the label's most highly sought after releases, Ultra-Violent recorded just one single before breaking up when vocalist Adie went on to front the Metal incarnation of the English Dogs. Three songs of blistering UK82, and quite possibly the best record in the genre. Finally reissued 32 years later, with original copies regularly selling for £70+ online. An excruciating amount of thought and love has been poured into this release to make it the best reissue it could be. The record also features a four page insert featuring reprints of original fanzine coverage, several previously unpublished photographs and also for the first time, a lyric sheet. Red vinyl available for mailorder only.

Americans: This has been released in the US by Video Disease Records, so please order from them and save time and postage.
Adie from Ultra Violent has also given us the thumbs up to make official Ultra Violent shirts featuring artwork from the insert, which are also available to order in the webstore. We've only made a small amount of these, so be quick!

SSR027: IMPALERS - Psychedelic Snutskallar 12"EP
In the modern climate of music, nothing sticks. Every week there is a new cool 7" or tape making the rounds on social media, littering your feed with Bandcamp demos and Instragamed cassette j cards. It's hard to keep up, yet an amazing time of stimulation and excitement for punks worldwide. But in the midst of all this madness - it's nice to know you can count on Impalers every year to release the best record of the year.

Unless you live under a rock, you probably already know what to expect from these guys. Their LP last year topped year end charts high and low. And Psychedelic Snutskallar does damage in all the same places. Peerless d-beat, a work of art. Completely unhinged yet tight and in the pocket. This time they have upped the ante with a monstrous opening track that takes up the whole A side at a never boring 11 minute length. Tripped out artwork and packing concept by Sam Ryser (Crazy Spirit, Dawn of Humans, Dripper World) and reworked material from short lived side project Sick Plot make this 12" EP a no brainer.

500 copies pressed, first 100 on Clear vinyl.

Americans: Please pick this up from 540 Records. It'll work out way cheaper for you!

Impalers will be coming to Europe this June for their first European tour, and will be bringing AJAX from New York with them! We've almost finished booking the tour, and will post dates up online once complete.

After these records, we'll have two more out very shortly! Here's the info. Both of these are also available to stream in full on our Bandcamp page right now:

SSR028: PERSPEX FLESH - Ordered Image 12"EP:

SSR029: SHEER MAG - S/T 7"

The debut 7" from Philadelphia's SHEER MAG finally gets a wider UK and European release! Sheer Mag seemingly came out of nowhere last Autumn with this killer four track EP. Right, that's all for now, but expect more info in a couple of weeks with ordering info for the above and a few other bits! Thanks a lot for reading as always, and I hope you like the new records.

Upcoming: SHEER MAG 7"

I'm pretty excited to let you know that Static Shock will be releasing the debut 7" from SHEER MAG for the UK and Europe! This was released by the band last year on their Wilsuns Wilsuns label and quickly grew into one of my favourite singles of recent memory.

Here's the write up for the record, courtesy of Sean Forbes:

The record will be out in late March (alongside the new Perspex Flesh 12"), but you should probably listen to it right now if you haven't already:
